Page 1 of 3 Pine Beetles: What are they and why are they bad?
In spite of their small site (adults reach a mere 3/32's of an inch), the pine beetle is the most destructive pine tree pest in the Southeastern United States. Pine beetles can compromise and even destroy pine trees in a matter of weeks and can infest neighboring trees readily. Infected trees turn brown and quickly become a falling hazard to life and property.
Actually, pine beetles don't destroy trees directly. Instead, they spread a specific fungus blue stain fungus, Grosmannia clavigera, that ends up clogging the water carrying processes in a tree and essentially starves the tree to death.
Help preserve your beautiful pines by working with a professional, qualified tree service like Little Bear to appropriately manage your trees.
